No3 Welsh Wing of Air Cadets in growth mode
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets are planning to increase their number nationally by 10,000 cadets. The first priority is to increase the number of adult volunteer instructors to teach the youngsters about such things as the theory of flight, engines, adventure training, first aid, presentation and instructional skills, and flight safety. Full training is given to all new adult instructors and continuous education is key to providing a spirit of venture and adventure.
No3 Welsh Wing wishes to see a net increase of around 200 cadets over the next two years, and is now actively recruiting new adult instructors and young people aged between 13 and 17 years of age. There are 24 units of the Air Cadets in South West and West Wales. No3 Welsh Wing, with its headquarters based in Swansea at the Grange TA centre in West Cross, is headed by a RAF Volunteer Reserve officer, Wg Cdr Mike Stones. In his day job, Mike works for a technology company based within Swansea University.
Mike is a former commanding officer of Port Talbot squadron. He and his staff are working hard this year to provide cadets with overseas camps in Gibraltar, The Netherlands and Normandy. In addition, cadets will attend summer camps at the world famous Royal International Air Tatto at RAF Fairford in Gloucester and at RAF High Wycome. Weekend flying and gliding is an essential element of Air Cadet training, with cadets winning flying and gliding scholarships to become licenced pilots.
This Sunday will see around 25 cadets and staff bag packing at Tesco Supermarket in Bridgend, as part of the fund raising efforts needed to support the upcoming camp in Gibraltar. Fund raising is organised under the auspices of the Wing Civilian Committee, which consists of civilian volunteers who give their time to support cadets and their officers to manage the non-public funds. Squadrons have their own civilian committees.
