Nigel Owens opens up on being gay in new book
GAY Welsh international referee Nigel Owens has opened up about his sexuality in a new book about coming out.
It's OK To Be Gay is being published on Coming Out Day on Friday with proceeds going to charity.
He said: "I was 19 when I realised that I was different to the norm. I grew up in Mynyddcerrig, a small village in Carmarthenshire. It was a typical old-fashioned, close- knit farming community.
"Once I realised I might be gay, I fought against it.
"For the first couple of years I had a girlfriend and tried to hide it."
