New video of proposed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon unveiled
A NEW video of the proposed tidal lagoon for Swansea Bay has been unveiled.
It is part of a £650 million investment in the area which could provide energy for around 107,000 homes.
The plans, which are still in development, are set to go out to consultation in June/July and an application could be made to the UK Secretary of State for Energy in late September or early October.
If it is given the go-ahead the lagoon could be turned on in 2017.

In the video, which shows artist impressions, Developer Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Ltd says the lagoon could have public art, feature oyster, mussels, kelp and samphire farms.
There could also be a visitors centre at the development, which could attract sports events such as triathlons and sailing – all which are shown in the updated video.
An environmental impact study is set to be carried out by independent experts.

“As a regular boater in the Bay, we lose so much on Leisure by not having enough launch facilities & water time (tidal)
This could provide an incredible watersports facility.
In my life time though ? ......... I
I have a 1957 feasibility report of building a Severn barrage to provide a road crossing & turbine power ... the proposed cost then was less than the repeated feasibility study carried out recently.”

“I'm fairly sure that Swansea Bay could afford to lose 5% of its dogfish without too much trouble. There's not much else out there these days.
This looks like a nice project. Perhaps they could even integrate some lock gates into it and create a new marina too.”

“This new company seems far more serious and committed to building this lagoon than the previous company. They've ran a presentation in the National Waterfront Museum and are taking some great efforts to promote the scheme. The previous company didn't even have a web site. For various reasons I think this scheme will happen sooner or later. Fossil fuels are getting ever more expensive, we are becoming more dependent on energy supplies from abroad, schemes to build more nuclear power stations seem to be faltering and the Severn Barrage scheme seems to face far more opposition. It has support from Friends of the Earth - a very large environmental campaign group. Projects like this can result in net benefits to marine life - let's not pre-judge it and wait for the outcome of the consutations. If all goes well, it'll be great to have this in Swansea Bay.”

“Zoomer i would like to see a total ban on world wide fishing, it's been estimated that by the middle of the century our seas and oceans will be totally devoid of all fish life. What generations to come will think of us i dread to think”

“Lose 5% of fish ! Being in the EU costs us more fish loss than this !
Apart from the electricity produced, this would be a huge visitor attraction for Swansea, with oceans of people wanting to walk along it.
Start building work this afternoon.”

“siarad2 we are always going to have to have study's into the impact of such a project, once we have lost our wildlife then we have lost it for good. It's not just about humans and our needs,we share this planet with billions of other creatures as well”

“I think it's now best to wait until the environmental impact study is carried out by independent experts, only then will we see if this project is worth going ahead with. What we are talking about here is the movement of a huge amount of sand, what effect will this have on our beaches. And with a 5% loss of fish life traveling through the turbines this could also be detrimental.”

“That thing looks amazing. I saw the video last night on their own website. It could be yet another world first for the Swansea Bay region.”
