THE new school year has taken on a literal meaning for pupils in parts of Swansea.

They are settling into five new primary schools as part of a continuing drive to improve education across the city and county.

Burlais Primary is opening on the sites of the former Cwmbwrla and Manselton primary schools today.

Meanwhile, Clydach infant and junior schools have merged and already opened as the all-through Clydach primary.

Gorseinon primary has now been established as an all-through school as well.

Welsh medium school Ysgol Gymraeg Y Cwm is breathing new life into the Bonymaen area.

At the same time St Joseph's Cathedral School is now an all-through primary school.

The changes are part of Swansea Council's Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 programme aimed at driving up standards and improve learning environments.

Cabinet member for learning and skills William Evans said: "It is an exciting time for all the pupils and staff in all the schools.

"I am delighted at how they have taken on board the developments.

"The changes will enable us to build on the strengths of long serving schools while following modern best practice.

"I hope the new start will prove an inspiration to youngsters and staff."

Former Cwmbwrla primary head teacher Alison Bastian is now in charge of the new Burlais Primary School.

She said: "Our new school mission statement is Working Together, Learning Forever, which I feel reflects the willingness amongst the two school communities to join together to create our wonderful new school.

"We have been busy preparing for this week's opening. It will be a delight to see the youngsters with their new Burlais uniforms.

"This is just the start of what I hope will be an even brighter future for Burlais primary as we aim to develop high quality learning experiences for our children."
