A NEW hunt with hounds and riders — but, crucially, no fox — is being launched in the Teifi Valley.

The organisers hope it will keep the traditions of hunting alive after changes to the law in 2004.

Instead of chasing a fox, the hunt will follow a scent laid down beforehand by a runner.

The first meet of the West Wales Farmers Bloodhounds will be in Newcastle Emlyn on Sunday, October 5.

The event has been organised by hunt masters Robert Thomas, Wyn Lloyd and Julie Hughes.

Ms Hughes said: "We want to continue the tradition of hunting on horseback, following a pack of hounds, while staying within the law.

"Hopefully, this will create a viable and sustainable hunting scene in West Wales.

"This style of hunting suits farmers as the masters have control of where hounds and horses run."

She said the hunt would also keep otter hound and bloodhound bloodlines available for future generations, as well as teaching horses and young riders cross- country skills.

The group has pledged to donate 10 per cent of money raised to good causes.

Ms Hughes added: "To date, we have donated free hunt days to the auction of promises held in July towards Newcastle Emlyn's playing fields renovation, and rugby balls for the Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club youth teams.

"We are also sponsoring Mike Kallenberg, a local runner who has held several Welsh vests and is going for the British and Irish championships in October."

Mike Kallenberg and his father, Mark, have volunteered as runners to drag a scent across the countryside and be pursued by hounds and riders.

The group also has a busy social calendar planned, with the hunt ball in February in Aberaeron, the Christmas raffle and children's meets at half-term.

The first meet of the West Wales Farmers Bloodhounds will be at the Emlyn Arms Hotel at noon on Sunday, October 5.
