New bill aimed at promoting eco-travel in Wales wins support
A NEW bill aimed at driving people out of their cars has been backed by a Welsh AM.
Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Plaid transport spokesman, said he welcomed the move to encourage people to cycle and walk more in the future.
Mr Elis-Thomas said he believed the bill would help promote the health of the population at a time of public spending cuts.
He said: "We will continue to support this bill today and as it goes into its implementation phase.
"In a situation of reduced public funding, there are obvious health gains and public spending benefits from improving the general health of the population as a result of this legislation.
"Passing the bill is important but it now needs to be fully integrated into the National Transport Plan so that there is an ongoing commitment to invest in the routes and infrastructure, and to integrate cycling and walking in particular with the rest of public transport."
