New Welsh 'Oyster card' undergoing trials
GOCYMRU, the new Welsh Government-funded smart travel card that will do away with the need for carrying the right money, has started trials.
Similar to London's Oyster Card, the aim of GoCymru is to enable passengers to travel cash- free on public transport across Wales.
Card holders will be able to top up their card online, on-bus, over the telephone or through retail machines installed at a number of locations including Post Offices.
The trial in Wrexham and Bangor will involve around 300 bus users, four bus operators, and retail outlets at a number of Post offices.

Two controlled trials have already taken place using bus networks in Cardiff and Newport.
The aim of the trials is to flag up any initial issues with the smart card technology.
This feedback will provide information for further development before GoCymru is rolled out throughout Wales from April.

“There are already plenty of problems with the ticket machines that First Bus use. Without a doubt this system is doomed to failure, unless First sort themselves out - which seems unlikely in light of many people's experiences.
If it's run in the same way as London's Oyster Card, it will be necessary to top up the card before travelling, unless the user wants to pay double fare. Card users will also have to pay for each bus trip separately. No more returns and if users want a day ticket that will mean getting one from a top-up shop, which may not be just round the corner or open, when needed.”
