Neath Port Talbot taxi drivers form funeral cortege in tribute to association chairman Mike Allen's wife
TAXI drivers came out in support of one of their own today.
Drivers from across Port Talbot lined up their cabs behind a hearse to make their way to the funeral of a wife of one of their colleagues.
Mike Allen, the youngest ever chairman of Port Talbot Taxi Association, lost wife Susan to a rare condition on Wednesday, October 16, at Morriston Hospital.
Mrs Allen, of Afandale Baglan Moors, was a mother of five and a grandmother of two, aged 54.
A taxi driver who arranged the funeral cortege and a former colleague of Mr Allen, who did not wish to be named, said around seven vehicles from Neath and Port Talbot took part to pay respects.
"They all lined up outside on the main road.
"We were in Mike’s A1 taxi following the hearse, and they all followed us then from there to Morriston.
"I was on the taxis for around 14 years, and Mike was always there as long as I can remember.
"Because he’s the chairman of the association, and he’s organised things like this before, I thought that I would do it for him.
"The taxi drivers were here to show their respect at this terrible time.
"Our thoughts are with the family."
He said Mrs Allen had become ill in the last month, and that her death came suddenly.
"It was a rare disease and they had done and were doing tests, but it was all too late.
"We’ve been rallying around to give our support to Mike and the family."
Mr Allen and his wife would have celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary two days following her death.
Mr Allen thanked nurses at Morriston Hospital for their treatment of his wife in her final days.
