NUT Cymru says Welsh Government proposals to fine parents will not help tackle truancy
TEACHING union NUT Cymru has criticised Welsh Government proposals to introduce fines for parents to combat truancy.
It says the move would undermine the good work already being done to tackle it.
The union says there has been steady fall in truancy, with new figures showing the highest level of primary school attendance since the Welsh Government started collecting data.
Wales policy officer Owen Hathway said co-operation with parents was essential.

“I am researching into truancy and would like to interview parents who have been prosecuted. Anonymity is guaranteed. I can pay £25 for the interview. If you are interested please contact Stephen Jones at the University of Bristol on 01179545380 or e-mail S.P.Jones@bristol.ac.uk”

“I am sure they will only fine parents as a last resort. What is the alternative when some parents blatantly could'nt care less whether their child goes to school or not,and others actively encourage their children not to attend. It is a parents duty and responsibility to ensure that their kids attend school”
