NFU and FUW to meet Welsh Deputy Agriculture Minister
FARMING unions will meet the Welsh Deputy Minister for Agriculture this week.
Alun Davies will outline his key priorities for 2013 with the NFU and FUW.
He said CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) and the new RDP (Rural Development Plan would be "uppermost in his mind" and he would emphasis the importance of "full engagement" from the unions to ensure the government was "able to develop the best possible outcome for the farming industry in Wales".
He added: "I generally welcome the goals of the draft CAP reform proposals from Europe and need to make sure that there is provision in the RDP for a range of services to support the farming industry. Farms are first and foremost businesses that, like every other business, need to be or become profitable and to remain profitable if they are to be sustainable for existing and future generations.

"During the next few weeks I expect to set out the main elements of the schemes we aim to deploy in Wales. I'll be consulting on my proposals for both direct payments and the RDP in February and I want the full support of the farming unions and wider industry players to ensure the responses I receive are wide ranging and constructive."
