Mystery lady jumps into Swansea Marina to save woman

A MYSTERY woman risked her own life by jumping into the freezing waters of Swansea Marina to pluck a woman to safety.

It is understood the rescuer was cycling around the South Dock when she saw the woman — believed to be in her late 50s — in the water.

The Good Samaritan then got off her bike, took off some of her clothes and jumped into the marina, getting her to an access ladder where passers-by were able to haul her to safety.

Incredibly, the unknown rescuer then checked the woman was okay before getting back on her bike and riding off.

She has been described by a witness to the drama as a "heroine" — but her identity is unknown.

Police, ambulance and fire crews with a rescue boat were called to Trawler Road in Swansea Marina, near the Meridian Tower, just after 4pm on Monday following reports that a woman was in difficulty in the water.

But despite arriving on the scene within minutes, the cycling life-saver had beaten them to it.

One eyewitness, who lives near where the rescue took place, said: "I was in the window of my flat when I saw two women near the edge of the marina, which looked a bit strange.

"There are no railings around that section of the marina, and I saw one of them go into the water.

"I rushed downstairs, and then I saw a woman cycling along.

"She stopped, just stripped off and went into the water after her.

"The woman was face down in the water, but this young woman got hold of her, put her in the recovery position and towed her to the nearest ladder, which must have been 40ft away.

"Three of us went to the ladder, and a lad went down the ladder and got them both out.

"That woman is a heroine — there is no doubt in my mind that she saved the life of that woman in the marina.

"The water was freezing and her lips were blue when she got out."

He added: "I've got to say the emergency services were incredible, they were there very quickly."

The woman in the water was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital for a check-up.

Having ensured the casualty was okay, the cyclist — described as a blonde woman in her 20s — then put her clothes back on and cycled away.

A South Wales Police spokesman confirmed emergency services had been scrambled to the marina.

He said: "We responded to reports of a woman going into the water off Trawler Road.

"It seems a passer-by went into the water and brought her out."
