Mum inspires hearty festive charity challenge
A PORT Talbot woman whose mother was born with a heart condition is taking on a festive challenge for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
Claire Shaw will take the charity's 5km Cardiff Santa Jog, which takes place on December 9.
She is raising money for the charity after being inspired by her mum, Susan Watkins, who was not aware that she had a heart condition until she was admitted to Prince Charles Hospital with chest pains and an irregular heartbeat. An angiogram revealed that she needed a valve replacement.
Claire, 30, said: "My mum has just had heart surgery to replace the aortic valve. This is supposed to be a straightforward operation and my mum was told it would take about four hours.

"It was while in theatre that the problems with her heart tissue were discovered. She was in theatre for 14 hours, needed 10 units of blood and has been in hospital for several weeks recovering.
"It has been really scary watching her go through so much, but I'm glad to see she is now well on the road to recovery.
"I want to take part in the Santa Jog to thank BHF Cymru for all its amazing work. I really hope people support BHF Cymru, its work is vital to discovering treatments to help people like my mum."
A Santa Jog will also be taking place in Swansea on December 2, which will see fundraiser Captain Beany will take part in dressed as Santa.
It will start at the Waterfront Museum at 11am.
