A MOTHER and daughter snatched a trolley load of goods in Asda, and then left without paying.

Pauline Jones, aged 53, of Gors Avenue, Mayhill and Mary-Anne Kirby-Edwards, aged 24, of Caerphilly Avenue, Bonymaen, went on the illegal shopping spree while in charge of children.

The pair admitted the offence at Swansea Magistrates' Court. The incident happened on October 26 in Asda in Llansamlet.

Julie Sullivan, prosecuting, said the pair entered the store with two children.

Kirby-Edwards filled a trolley with items valued at £128.72 before Jones, her mother, bought a loaf of bread separately.

They then left without paying for the trolley load. Kirby-Edwards also admitted to another theft five days earlier.

Miss Sullivan said she had entered Asda and stolen items worth £34.12.

"While inside the store, Miss Edwards stole two CDs from there and concealed them down her trousers," she said.

"She then took a DVD and concealed that down her trousers and a hair band was selected and placed around her wrist."

Following her arrest, she told officers: "It was me, I did it on my own."

David James, defending, said: "Miss Edwards is a single parent.

"She's struggling at present with her commitments.

"She simply couldn't afford the items in the trolley, and her mother, together with her, pushed it out of the store."

Probation officer Helen Beckers, said that Kirby-Edwards had told her she took some of the items out of more of "a want than a need".

"She admits that she's going to be extremely embarrassed and extremely ashamed at having to do community work," said Mrs Beckers.

Kirby-Edwards was given a 12-month community order, and must undertake 60 hours of unpaid work.

Jones was given a six-month community order with supervision.

The pair must each pay £85 costs.
