It is understood the man left Swansea's Morriston Hospital after going outside to have a cigarette.
An Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board spokeswoman said because the man left Morriston Hospital before he was discharged by a doctor they told both security and the police.
A South Wales Police spokesman said: "The man missing from the Morriston area on Thursday was found safe and well that night."
An Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board spokeswoman added: "We can confirm a patient left one of our hospitals of their own free will on Wednesday.
"Because the patient left before being discharged by a doctor we informed security and the police. "This is completely normal as it is important to locate the patient and carry out a welfare check."
