The culprits have also damaged storage pods based outside the community centre, which have been painted by youngsters.

Bryn and Cwmavon councillor Marian Lewis said she could not believe the attack on the community.

"I am fuming," she said. "I think something like this is appalling.

"The youngsters have done this project with the bus shelter and now it has been spoilt.

"They are showing no respect for the community. I can't believe it. I am disgusted.

"We have done so much in the village and some idiot has done this. It is a poor reflection on the village."

Fellow councillor David Williams added: "It is disgusting. They have done the bus shelters up so lovely and you get these mindless morons who do this."

The community artwork work was undertaken by environmental charity Groundwork Bridgend Neath Port Talbot with the support of sustainable transport partnership BayTrans.

The two bus shelters have become community galleries for pieces of art that were developed by artist Anne Gibbs following work undertaken with local school children and young people.

Bryn and Cwmavon councillor Dave Whitelock said they had never had this problem before.

"It is bad at the moment," he said.

"We have not had anything like this for years.

"Some of the graffiti is quite personal. It has all happened within the last week. It is a shame as people have put so much into it. They are mindless idiots with a spray can."

Mr Whitelock added that if anyone saw anything suspicious to let them know.

"People can get in touch with the police, us councillors or Community First if they see anything," he said.

Call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
