Mid Wales burger company withdraws products after samples test positive for horse meat

A mid Wales firm has withdrawn beefburgers from sale after samples tested positive for at least 1 per cent horse meat. Testing carried out by Powys County Council, requested by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found that three samples of beefburger products from the Burger Manufacturing Company (BMC) showed evidence of contamination. The firm, based in Builth Wells, is contacting its customers to inform them of the results of these tests and to recall any of the affected products that they may have. The FSA said further work is being carried out to establish exactly how much horse meat these products contain and to test for the presence of the veterinary medicine phenylbutazone, or bute. It comes after the news Aberystwyth company Farmbox Meats and an abattoir in England were raided last week following an investigation into horse meat in beef products. On Saturday Dyfed-Powys Police and the FSA confirmed that three men arrested on suspicion of offences under the fraud act were released on bail pending further inquiries. The men, two aged 64 and 42 from the Aberystwyth area and one aged 63 and from West Yorkshire were arrested on Thursday, 14 February. They will return to answer bail in Aberystwyth at a later date. In Carmarthenshire, food firm Castell Howell Foods announced yesterday they withdrew one of its suppliers' cottage pies from sale over a possible horse meat contamination. The company said it was told the pies from Irish ready-meal supplier Oak Farm could be contaminated with horse meat. Castell Howell director Brian Jones said the firm had contacted customers who received deliveries of the pies. Oak Farm has launched an investigation. Swansea Council confirmed this week that their meat suppliers have conducted DNA tests in the wake of the horse meat scandal, and Carmarthenshire Council has said it is also confident of no contamination in its meat supply which caters for schools and social care settings. A spokesman for Neath Port Talbot Council also moved reassure the community that none of their suppliers' products contain horse meat.
