Michael Sheen takes a shine to new charity patron role

HOLLYWOOD actor Michael Sheen is well known for his portrayal of famous faces — from former Prime Minister Tony Blair to Brian Clough.

But the 42-year-old from Baglan has taken on another new role as patron of West Glamorgan Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (WGCADA).

Michael, who is about to tread the boards in Hamlet at London's New Vic at the end of this month, said he was pleased he was asked to be involved with the charity after seeing for himself the impact it had made on people living in the area.

"It gives me great pleasure to accept your offer of making me a patron of WGCADA," he said.

"I would be honoured to be involved with an organisation that does such valuable work for the community.

"Having seen that work first hand and witnessed how it has played a part in changing so many people's lives, I am convinced that it represents all that is most important in our society."

A special invitation was sent out to Michael to visit the charity's Port Talbot offices, which he did in May last year.

The aim of the organisation is to help prevent, treat and reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drugs to individuals, their families, along with the wider community.

He not only spent time at the agency but also at 12 Café — a social enterprise aiming to provide WGCADA service users with a safe environment where they can develop confidence, self-esteem and new skills, as well as gaining qualifications in catering and hospitality.

The actor also took time out to meet with service users, volunteers and staff members and could see the direct impact that the organisation had, not just on the individuals themselves, but also the community as a whole.

Michael added he was thrilled to be linked to the charity and its hard-working staff.

"I was welcomed so graciously and warmly by Sam (harm reduction project worker) and her colleagues when I visited and was really impressed by the work they were doing," he added.

"I would feel privileged to be associated with WGCADA and all the people involved with it."
