Gorseinon Council meeting descends into 'anarchy' as mayor refuses to resign
GORSEINON Council's monthly meeting descended into anarchy as members of the public called on the mayor to apologise and resign.
Chairman Victor Bruno came under fire again from the packed public gallery, following a heated council meeting in October.
The meeting started at 7pm, but was put into recess by Mr Bruno around 30 minutes later following a rowdy public question time.
At one point former town council chairman Eric Davies even said he would call the police to have Mr Bruno removed.
During the 15-minute period in which members of the public are invited to speak, Gorseinon resident Lorraine Davies asked the mayor about a letter she had sent to the council asking for an apology for an incident which happened in September's meeting.
She said to the chairman: "I wrote to the clerk on September 28 with regard to contacting yourself and your description of the public present as 'rabble' and I have asked for an apology.
"I have not had an acknowledgement or a reply. I would ask you now for an apology."
In response Mr Bruno said he did not know of the letter. However, the clerk said the letter had been distributed and read out at the meeting. Mr Bruno said he would not comment at that time.
Mr Davies then shouted out: "Are you man enough to apologise for what you said?"
To which Mr Bruno replied: "It's over."
After warning the roughly 40-strong public gallery the meeting on Wednesday night would be closed if they did not stop talking, he put the council into recess for 10 minutes. During the recess the public made calls for Mr Bruno to step down as council chairman, which were met with a round of applause from the gallery.
Mr Davies also said he would stand there all night waiting for an apology, but Mr Bruno remained largely silent while the gallery jostled and jeered.
He then attempted to reopen the meeting and follow the agenda, but the public continued to question him.
At 7.45pm the meeting was closed.
Last month Mr Bruno was hit with a vote of no confidence by his own council — but refused to stand down.
Mr Bruno was asked to leave his post by councillors — and some of the 70 residents who attended the heated public meeting. But despite the six to five vote, plus a 500-strong petition, Mr Bruno remained defiant.
At the meeting, the businessman pointed the finger at the media for his unpopularity, and said he had done nothing wrong in spending more than £4,000 of taxpayers' money on a community awards evening.
The matter has been reported to the Ombudsman.

“This is the same Mr Bruno who took the chair unelected of the former Swansea Independent Association and helped to destroy it, so that the independents@swansea could be formed. They played apart of getting him elected as a town councillor in Gorseinon, and as everyone knows they along with the liberal democrats are destroying our city.”

“Can we have the meetings televised please. Better than watching the Muppet show...”

“I remember the evening post reporting the same type of hysteria happenning in Dunvant a few years ago. Although that was led by the lib dem councillors and a woman friend of theirs for political gain. I also remember reading that Dunvant put up their precept to pay for a new park unlike Cllr Bruno who just wanted more money to spend.
Lets be honest here - the lib dems and their partners the independents@swansea are a poisonous mixture - just look what they have done to our city.
Swansea is on its knees both morally and financially.”
