MAYALS Primary School won the top prize in the final race of this year's LC Swansea Bay Fun Runs.

Even the rain did not stop children having a great time at Blackpill Lido, where the races started from.

The races began with the nursery children running 100 metres along with mums and dads, progressing through the school years to Year 6, who ran 800m.

With many in school colours, all runners received their LC medal and goody bag at the finish.

Mayals won £400 as over the two evenings they had 226 children take part. Runners-up were Bishopston (£300), third Oystermouth(£200) and fourth Parklands (£100), and the best newcomer award based on the percentage of pupils to school size was Llwynderw, who won £200.

The LC Swansea Bay 5k has quickly become a very successful event with more than 2,000 runners taking part.

Nic Beggs, general manager of the LC, said: "It was fantastic to see such a great turnout during this week's fun run despite the rain.

"The popularity of this event just shows how Swansea is a city that cares about its health and wellbeing.

"The presence of so many local primary schools from across Swansea was extremely inspiring.

"Bay Leisure Ltd, the operators of the LC, are committed to encouraging local children to take part in sport and the fun run is a great way to do this in an Olympic year."

The runs will take place again next year in May and June.
