FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a huge blaze at the doomed Linamar plant in Jersey Marine.

Around 30 of them were involved in dealing with the fire, which broke out just after midnight.

It was brought under control but one crew remained at the scene this morning, cooling down the two-storey building in which the fire started.

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "There were no injuries to the workforce or to fire service personnel.

"The fire service prevented it spreading to a large oil storage tank and a chemical storage area."

A specialist officer who deals with hazardous materials was sent to the scene.

But the spokeswoman emphasised: "There was no contamination and no risk to the public."

Four appliances, a turntable ladder, a foam appliance, 20 breathing apparatus, two ground monitors and four jets were used to bring the fire under control.

"We still have one appliance in attendance, from Swansea, along with two officers," said the spokesman.

Linamar bosses announced in July that the plant, formerly Ford and then Visteon, would close by the end of this year with the loss of more than 200 jobs.
