Mark Orders column: Will the real Roger Lewis please stand up
WILL the real Roger Lewis stand up, please, because after the events of the past week or so we can’t be sure who the WRU group chief executive is any more.
Firstly we had diplomat Roger in his best Ban Ki-moon mode, admirably trying to help defuse the row over European rugby. Then we had some bloke wielding a big stick on Scrum V, trying to browbeat the four Welsh professional sides into signing a participation agreement with a threat that failure to do so might lead to dire consequences for the regional scene.
Sorry, the chap who showed up on Scrum V is out of order.
Ten years ago, the WRU ripped up the old structure in Wales and asked supporters to invest in regional rugby. They have done so to varying degrees. But now the union evidently thinks it is okay to talk about the regional scene withering. That is just wrong.
Supporters deserve better and so does Welsh rugby generally.
