CHARLTON Athletic say new recruit Mark Gower is "clearly not ready" for first-team action after joining on loan from Swansea City - but they hope he will be soon.

Gower joined the Addicks on loan until May last week having not featured for Swansea since early autumn.

But the experienced midfielder did not even make the bench as Charlton were beaten by Kenny Jackett's Millwall in their South London derby last Saturday.

Charlton boss Chris Powell has fingers crossed that Gower will be up to speed by the time his new club return to action after the international break against Brighton.

"Mark's trained with us a couple of times," said Powell.

"He's clearly not ready for Championship football at this present time, but he will be by then.

"We will train right and we will make sure that he will bring what he's got, which is quality.

"He's a good footballer and has got a good eye for a pass and will bring his Premiership experience and quality to us."

“Why is mark gower moaning about laudrup not giving him a chance when the team in the lower league are saying he was not fit enough?

Sorry mark, grateful for what you done, but I think you need to look closer to home on this one.

“what the hell has he been doing if he is not fit for the championship, he's not even fit enough for the bench and a possible 20 mins, has he been training with the rest of the swans , makes you wonder what has gone on”
