Marathon man Lee Morris to take on the Amazon for Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre
YOU can think of easier ways to get fit.
Fanatic Lee Morris from Waunarlwydd will be running 158 miles for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre next week.
But if that wasn’t daunting enough, the 32-year-old will be running in the Amazon rainforest, taking part in the extreme Jungle Marathon.
And Lee, who used exercise to help him beat testicular cancer, is looking forward to his most challenging event yet.
“I was diagnosed with cancer six years ago now,” he said.
“I found a lump, but fortunately I caught it early and was very lucky, I made a full recovery.
“I had always been into my sport and keeping fit and had never been ill before.
“So I had always enjoyed running before I was diagnosed but it really did help me to take my mind off things.
“I have done a few ultra marathons now, last year I ran from Richmond to Oxford, which is 100 miles. I did it in 27 hours, I had some dark moments but it was all about finishing it.
“This will be my biggest challenge though, it is 158 miles approximately and you have to be totally self sufficient, you have to carry all your own kit and equipment.
“It’s been tough, you can’t really mimic the Amazon.
“I have been training around Waunarlwydd and Gowerton and running up Constitutional Hill.”
The once-in-a-lifetime adventure has been named the world’s toughest endurance race by CNN.
Lee will be facing 99 percent humidity, temperatures of 40c, as well as the difficult terrain and landscape — and untold wildlife — of the Amazon jungle.
And Lee is looking to raise as much money as possible for Maggie’s, which provides support and care for cancer sufferers and their families.
“It’s very well organised, I’ve had a lot of inoculations and have had to pass a full medical,” he said.
“Maggie’s wasn’t around when I had cancer but they give so much support to people and their families.
“My family and friends all think I am a bit nuts. I am bit wary but am really looking forward to it now.”
