A MAN who went out with two knives after taking a cocktail of cancer drugs and cocaine, told magistrates he was late for court because he'd had "an incident with a machete".

Jason Maynard, aged 29, of Rheidol Avenue, Clase limped into Swansea Magistrates' Court before making the statement.

Patricia Ashford, prosecuting, said the knife offences, which were unrelated to the so-called "machete" incident, happened early on February 6 at the Clase Store in Solva Road.

"Mr Maynard went into the store intoxicated," she said.

"It was 7.30am and he wanted to buy a bottle of wine."

The shop worker refused to sell it to him, before spotting that Maynard had a three-inch knife on him.

Mrs Ashford said Maynard, who wasn't threatening anyone with the blade, fled the store.

Police were called to the scene and gave chase.

"They saw him throw a knife over the fence," said Mrs Ashford. "He then took a second knife out of his pocket and threw that."

Police later located a black handled steak knife as well as the second knife in the gardens of neighbouring properties in Solva Road.

Maynard pleaded guilty to twice possessing a blade, failing to comply with a community order and failing to surrender.

He said he was late to court following an "incident with a machete". But no other mention of the incident was made.

Following his arrest Maynard told police he had taken a cocktail of drugs including crystal meth, cocaine and cancer treatment drugs.

The court heard he claimed he didn't know why he'd ran from police and was sentenced to a 12 month community order with supervision. He must also pay £85 costs.
