A MAN who stole a jacket to show off to his girlfriend has appeared in front of magistrates.

Christian Leigh Hole, 43, took the coat from the Wales Tactical Store on High Street, Swansea.

Prosecutor Julie Sullivan told city magistrates he had been passing the store on High Street with his girlfriend when he picked the jacket up from a table outside.

He then went along High Street but the store manager caught up with Hole who said: "Sorry mate, I'm a bit ****ed".

Hole, of Dinas Fechan, Strand, Swansea, then handed the jacket back but later admitted theft telling police he had taken it show off to his girlfriend but admitted he didn't have anyway to pay for it.

The court was told Hole had 36 previous convictions for theft and Stuart John, representing Hole, said alcohol had been "a problem" for his client.

"In the grand scheme of things, all be it this is dishonest, there's an element of foolishness and playing the fool," added Mr John.

Hole was given a 12-month conditional discharge, told to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.

“For goodness sake!! He has 36 (THIRTY-SIX) previous convictions for theft. What do people like this have to do to get a prison sentence? And what are the conditions of this 12 month conditional discharge? Not to get a 38th? Not to get caught? Pathetic! He only gave it back because they manager caught up with him, otherwise I expect he would have sold it for drink or drugs. Maybe the conditions should be to dry out.”
