Police say a 68-year-old driver of a silver Audi estate car is currently helping them with their enquiries.
Officers are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.
A South Wales Police spokesman said: "Police need to urgently speak to anyone who may have travelled along Dyfatty Street this morning between 5am hours and 5.30am, or who may have seen the pedestrian or the Audi vehicle beforehand."
