Man arrested after demo by South Wales National Front in Swansea

A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested during a demonstration by Far Right campaigners in Swansea.

Police intervened during the demonstration in the city centre on Saturday organised by the South Wales National Front in Union Street.

Officers made the arrest for an alleged racial public order offence. They also confiscated banners and posters to ensure there was no breach of the peace.

The 21-year-old man is believed to be from Swansea and has been released on bail following the arrest.

Chief Superintendent Mark Mathias said: "South Wales Police can confirm that they attended a report of a small demonstration in the city centre as a result of which one man was arrested.

"We had a group of between 15 and 20 local men who were demonstrating with banners.

"It was believed to be in connection with a recent court case.

"We can confirm banners were removed to ensure there was not a breach of the peace.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

Adam Lloyd, deputy organiser for the South Wales National Front, said the event was attended by around 30 members and supporters of the National Front.

Refused

Mr Lloyd said: "The National Front has got people in many places.

"The point of the demonstration was to raise awareness of a court case."

Mr Lloyd said the demonstration received positive support from the general public.

He said: "We had a good 20 minutes, then the police turned up.

"They tried to stop the demonstration straight away which we refused."

Mr Lloyd confirmed the man who was arrested was a supporter rather than a member of the South Wales National Front.

The deputy organiser also said his group were supportive of re-instating the death penalty.

He added: "They should bring back capital punishment for certain crimes, for paedophiles and terrorists."
