I WAS encouraged to see the result of a recent poll where 86 per cent of people supported the strengthening of the Hunting Act (2004). I have many years experience of monitoring the activities of bloodsports fanatics and in my experience they have not adapted their hunting activities to comply with legislation.

Sadly the message that has been sent out to the hunts due to a lack of police interest is that the hunting fraternity are above the law and this has resulted in a number of violent incidents being directed towards hunt monitors throughout the country. On Gower we have witnessed huntsmen on foot casting hounds in to thick areas of woodland and gorse where it is physically impossible to lay a trail, resulting in an inevitable chase of wildlife. I trust that our MPs will take action against this cruel activity and support the campaign led by Protect Our Wild Animals and include a reckless behaviour clause in the Hunting Act (2004).

“Catherine of Reynoldstown, Gower, your memory is very important as I believe that many hunt followers accept the false narrative about what happens to the fox. I have compiled a document of hunt 'incidents' in support of getting the Ban properly enacted, and many of these are of foxes being torn apart in front of members of the public - in private and public places. I am also writing about the effects of witnessing violent hunt killings, and would be very glad to talk to you. . This is the third account of a pregnant vixen being torn to bits by hounds, that I have seen.”

“I grew up on a farm and am fully aware that foxes are not 'furry cuties'. I'm sorry for what happened to your rabbit - was he out in the garden when they got him as I've yet to meet a fox that can open a securely locked coop or run. My friends used to hunt when I was younger and yes I have seen foxes killed - I've seen the state of them after being shot or left to die in snare as well as by hounds and i've seen chickens taken by foxes. So I am not some naive person who doesn't understand the issues. I don't think hunting with hounds has ever been about controlling fox numbers - it's just another excuse to try and make this cruelty seem necessary in some way.”

“Well Marion, Swansea I'm glad you are anti meat? That's good. Have you hunted Marion? I used to hunt frequently in Bedfordshire and I have seen a "kill", no I didn't like it but it was exactly as I said, quick, painless and ethical. How do you think the fox population should be controlled then? Or are you of the opinion that they are furry little cuties. The foxes in next doors garden watched my little bunny for about 2 months .... then, cunningly they ATE HIM?”

“I have grown up in a fox hunting family and community, I myself have ridden behind the hunt, the majority of times I never got a glimpse of the kill, but the first time I did it changed my stance and lifestyle forever. I too was lead to believe the fox died from a nip to the neck, untill I saw with my own eyes a pregnant vixen being brutely torn apart by the majority of the pack while the red coats watched. I was horrified (a severe understatement) to think THIS is what I had supported and been brought up with. I can safely say i have never rode with the hunt again, I have never gone to a meeting or even gone out to support, I have even stopped eating meat. The whole experiene makes me sick to my stomach, but at least I have seen it from both sides, and I would love to see the ban enforced!!!”

“And - can we stop this myth that hunted foxes die quickly? The are mauled, ravaged and torn apart by a pack of hounds and die a painful lingering death. the 'nip to the back of the neck' story is a convenient myth. You think the hounds all stand back calmly and let the lead hound do the business in a matter of seconds? Don't be silly. And why do we have to choose between hunting them and other methods? I choose neither thanks!”

“Swanseajock the law is being broken and there have been prosecutions, both for illegal hunting and assaulting monitors and theft of their equipment (cameras mainly). Anyone would think the hunts had something to hide...”

“Anti, the law isn't being broken, or there would be convictions for that offence. It is another badly thought through law, like gun cntrol, which doesn't do what it set out to do. I accept that many different people huint, but this law as used by the 'New Labour' mob to pacify their rank and file who consider that all hunters are toffs. The chikld abuse issue, in my opinion, and we are allowed an opinion, this was put in the previous comment, as always to put the arguement that hunting is on a par with those crimes. Is it cruel to have a pack of dogs kill a fox quickly, or is it beter to trap, shoot and poison them where there is no discrimination between strong and weak, and no surety that they will die instantly.
And you are right, I do care, about the waste of parliamentary time used to drive this legislation through, 70 odd hours?. And I do like to stir up arguement and debate, free country democracy, for the time being”

“I think that the hunt is a much more humaine way of reducing the number of foxes. Hunting with the dogs is a natural way to do it. Much better than the other options which dont bear thinking about ...... Poison, trapping ect.”

“Who appoints the hunt monitors? Self appointed, self serving anti hunt individuals who need to look at what's going on in the world around them. If you want something worthwhile protesting about then try doing something about terrorism.”
