Major boost for Carmarthen Town as star man Liam Thomas agrees new deal

CARMARTHEN Town have been boosted by the news that star player Liam Thomas has signed a new contract.

And on-loan striker Scott Quigley will stay at Richmond Park for the rest of the season.

Thomas was attracting interest from rival clubs ahead of the January transfer window, but has agreed a fresh two-year deal with Town.

"I am always anxious to make sure that a player of Liam's class and quality has signed on the dotted line," said manager Mark Aizlewood.

"There have been a number of clubs sniffing around to see if they could get him to join them during the forthcoming transfer window.

"So that is why I have now made sure he is tied to us for the foreseeable future."

Thomas was born in Neath and played for his home town club before joining Afan Lido at the start of last season.

"It has been a fabulous experience for me to be coached by someone like the manager since I joined in August," he said.

"He has taught me so much and I know that my game has improved considerably.

"Hopefully I can add to the ten goals I have scored so far this season."

And further good news followed as 19-year-old striker Quigley was given permission by The New Saints to remain with the Old Gold for the rest of the campaign.

Meanwhile, central defender Matthew Rees has been voted Welsh Premier League player of the month for October.

"This is a well-deserved award for someone who has been a stalwart in defence for us all season," added Aizlewood.

"What makes the award taste even better for Matthew is that it is only voted upon by Welsh Premier League players who obviously have a lot of respect for him."

Rees has made 246 league appearances for Port Talbot Town, Neath and Carmarthen Town.

Meanwhile, Town are also celebrating after reaching the final of the World Cup after a 2-1 defeat of Llanelli in the semi-final.

He last won the award way back in September 2006.

Saturday's televised home match against league leaders Prestatyn (3.45) has been designated 'Pink Day' by the club.

Carmarthen will wear specially made pink shirts for the game which has been designated a fund-raising effort for cancer charities.
