MacDonald to skipper under-21s against the Azzurri
SHAUN MacDonald is set to lead Wales Under-21s out at the Liberty Stadium next month — and as many as four other Swansea City players could join the Blaenymaes product in the starting line up against Italy.
Goalkeeper David Cornell, utility man Jazz Richards, midfielder Joe Allen and winger Casey Thomas are also named in Brian Flynn's 25-strong party for the Euro 2011 qualifier, making Swansea the best represented club. And Allen is selected despite the fact he is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.
MacDonald skippered Wales during their 4-1 win against Hungary at the racecourse 10 days ago, when he also got his name on the scoresheet.
"Shaun deserved to be captain and it's likely he will be again," said under-21 boss Flynn.
"I'm delighted with the progress of the Swansea players and it's no coincidence these guys came through together.
"You don't get luck when it comes to young players. First you've got to spot them, then you've got to develop them.
"Now they've got to take their chance.
"If you're asking, could they play every minute of every game this season, my answer would probably be no, but they can make an impact whether from the start or as a substitute." One Swansea player not included though is 20-year-old Kerry Morgan, despite making his full Swansea debut against Reading in midweek.
"That was a big boost for Kerry and he's been on the fringes of our squad," said Flynn.
"We've named a bigger squad than normal and Kerry was one of the next in line."
