MP Huw Irranca-Davies has expressed his dismay that the Work Programme launched by the Coalition Government last June has failed to achieve the success promised.

The MP, originally from Gowerton, accused David Cameron and George Osborne of turning their backs on a generation of young Welsh people.

In his Ogmore constituency, in the first 14 months of the Work Programme only 30 jobs were created.

"It is deeply disappointing that the work programme has not succeeded," he said.

“There are a couple of work programmes working in Swansea. From what I've heard, they've done a wonderful job of saving the government money, by stopping people from getting benefits. They will 'sanction' any jobseeker for the slightest infringement, leaving them without income for 2 weeks minimum, up to a year.

If a claiment is sent to work for a *Poundshop* for no money and refuses, they're sanctioned. Miss an appointment - sanctioned.

Anyone else noticed there's been an increase in the number of muggings in Swansea recently?”

“Hint for Huw - there's no point in having a work programme without some kind of job creation scheme being run alongside it. Given our current government, that's a non-starter. Since coming to power, all they've done is put people out of work.”
