IT IS a present fit for a king.

A uniquely carved Welsh lovespoon which has been created and designed by a nine-year-old cub member to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

And the lucky lad, Joseph Tucker, from Uplands, will be sending the lovespoon — which features a crown, two hearts and a heart-shaped end — to the happy couple to mark their special day, after he won a competition to design a lovespoon at Swansea and Gower Cubs' Eisteddfod.

Keen Cub Joseph said: "I love being a Cub and I am very happy to have won the competition.

"I really enjoyed designing and creating the spoon as well. It will be sent to them for the wedding and I hope they like it."

Joseph's mum, Cheryl, said the creative youngster, who attends Brynmill Primary School, was very happy about winning the competition and seeing his design brought to life.

"Joseph has been very excited about winning the competition and it is really nice that the design has been made and that he has a hand in helping carving it as well," she said.

"It is amazing for him to see something he designed and help carve come to life.

"He is very creative and loves being in the Cubs and has done a lot with them so this is lovely."

Mrs Tucker also said Joseph has a connection with the famous couple already.

"I'm not sure he realises it is a bit of history and it is quite funny really as he played Prince William at his school Christmas play. I just hope they appreciate it," she said.

"We have had a letter from Clarence House expressing their thanks which was lovely as well."

Akela of the Sketty Cubs, Viv Lewis, said the competition had been run for many years and it seemed appropriate to send it to the couple to wish them well.

"We hold an eisteddfod each year where we have number of competitions including Welsh cake making, daffodil arranging and of course designing a lovespoon.

"The competition was judged by Pat Price of the Lovespoon Gallery in Mumbles and has been carved as a gesture to mark the Royal wedding.

"We haven't decided how it will be sent to them yet. Bearing in mind it is valuable, we will have to see how best it can be delivered to them."

Prince William and Kate Middleton will be getting married at Westminster Abbey on April 29.
