Llansteffan apprentice proves she is a cut above
A YOUNG apprentice from Llansteffan is going head to head in a UK-wide competition to showcase her talent among the country's best hairdressing trainees.
Coleg Sir Gâr student Morgan Rennie, aged 19, will be competing at the Skills Show in Birmingham in November following her success in a range of skills competitions she took part in throughout the year.
Morgan won two golds in the EU-backed Skills Competition Wales in March for both hairdressing and nail technology — the first student ever to win in two separate categories. She then entered and won bronze at the UKSkills competition organised by L'Oreal at the college's Llanelli salon which saw competitors travel from as far as Newcastle, Dudley and Warwickshire to take part. Coleg Sir Gâr, whose principal Barry Liles is the Skills Champion for Wales, encouraged Morgan to take part in competitions and since receiving confirmation that Morgan was awarded one of the highest scoring points across the UK, are preparing her for the November competition.
Morgan has progressed to a part-time level three hairdressing course with the college, following an offer of an apprenticeship from Morgan Edward hair salon in Carmarthen.
She is currently training for the competition which could lead to the highest scoring participants competing at the WorldSkills competition being held in Brazil in 2015.
Lecturer Emma Christopher has co-ordinated both the Wales Skills and hosted UK skills competitions at Coleg Sir Gar, and feels passionate about demonstrating the high ability of learners skills in the Industry. She said: "These competitions are of a very high standard and credit must be given to students who show their talent while under the pressure of public completion environments."
Angharad Holmes, also a lecturer at Coleg Sir Gar, was Morgan's course tutor last year and supported her as a mentor for all the completions.
Both Emma and Angharad have been requested by L'Oreal UK to be scrutineers in the UK finals in Birmingham in November.
