THE story of a forgotten Llanelli silent movie star has finally been told, and could soon be recognised by Bafta Cymru.

Dafen-born Gareth Hughes, who was born William John on August 23, 1894, walked from Llanelli to London in search of his dream.

Between 1918 and 1931, Gareth Hughes starred in 45 movies in Hollywood, and on Broadway.

At the height of his fame he was earning $2,000 a week.

His relative, Kelvin Guy, aged 45, from Burry Port, has been researching his Hollywood relative, who was his grandmothers cousin, for the past three years.

Mr Guy said: "He is now being recognised as Wales' first film star.

"I have spoken to Bafta Cymru because he has never been recognised. They are now looking into it."

And the screening of the documentary of Gareth Hughes's life on August 23 was hailed a success. Mr Guy, who created the documentary and introduced it to the audience, said: "It was a really amazing turnout,

''As far as I could tell, everybody enjoyed it.

"About 80 people attended, and there was quite a buzz."

There is now going to be a blue commemorative plaque on Princess Street, Llanelli, in memory of the star.
