THOUSANDS of pets are being put down or abandoned by their owners because of the recession.

And it is putting extra pressure on Llys Nini RSPCA Centre in Penllergaer which is having to take in and care for some of the credit crunch casualties.

You can read a special two-page report on the issue in Tuesday's South Wales Evening Post.

And below you can see what happened when Llys Nini deputy manager Laura Simpson joined us for a webchat on the subject today.

“Llys Nini do a marvellous job, and any responsible pet owner would gladly pay these fees, without the RSPCA and DOGS TRUST these animals would be thrown out and left to fend for themselves. Well done RSPCA and anyone else who is prepared to take in animals”

    “Adoption Fees.

As already stated the adoption fee charged at Llys Nini does not cover the actual cost of medicating, neutering, vaccinating, microchipping, feeding and caring for the animals.
Most of the animals that come into Llys Nini come in via the RSPCA Inspectors. They have often been abused or neglected which means they often need vet care and recovery time.
Unfortunately this all takes money. The adoption fee goes a little way to pay for this care. The rest of the money is raised by hard working local volunteers.
We would be very grateful for help in fund-raising. RSPCA week starts 27th April. Any little thing done at home or in work to raise funds would be a huge help to keep the Animal Centre open for another year.
A big thanks to all the people who give regularly to keep Llys Nini open to rescue these animals in need.”

“What an absurded waste of time and money, Why don't they just give out one potatoe sack and a brick with each pet sold so the owners can put both the brick and animal in the bag, tie it tight and drop it in the Tawe. Problem solved.”

“Perhaps we should just get rid of 'Pet Hates' and not pets themselves.”

“Well said Canine Companion, I have taken in rescue cats all my life and the adoption fee certainly does not cover the actions any responsible pet owner would take - microchipping, neutering, health check, flea and worming treatment. This would amount to a couple of hundred pounds at any vet surgery. Personally I would make any cutbacks necessary to hold on to my pets, they are a lifelong commitment after all.”

“To those who have an issue with adoption fees at rehoming centres; The adoption fee you pay is not too far off from what you would pay if you rehomed the animal for free and then, like a responsible owner, had the animal spayed / neutered and had up to date jabs - like would have been done if you'd rehomed from a centre,so what are you trying to say?! You'd rather have an animal for free and leave the poor thing open to future difficulties or illness? Your concern should be the health of the animal, you would have to pay this cost ANYWAY.”

“What Llys Nini don't seem to understand is that people who are looking to adopt a pet can't afford the exhorbitant fees they charge to take one of these animals home. This is not to say that they will not be able to afford to feed the animal or for medical fees, but last time i looked, to adopt a kitten Llys Nini were charging £50. Thats pretty steep when you can pick up kittens "free to a good home" in this very paper. Don't underestimate peoples genoristy to donate by putting fixed prices on the animals heads that invariably leads to them failing to be rehoused and subsequently put down.”

“Animal lover, Swansea - the Cats Protection Leauge do an amazing job and do not charge for adoptions - they ask for a small donation, maybe people should start using them instead of RSPCA.”
