Little Charlie smiles his way to top baby league
A WAUN Wen toddler's winning smile has scooped the title of Evening Post Baby and Toddler of the Year 2013.
One-year-old Charlie Purcell took the judges' vote for the overall crown in the Evening Post's annual competition.
Charlie's mum Lisa Midwinter, 24, said she was surprised at her son's victory.
She said: "It was my sister Natalie's idea to enter Charlie.
"When I found out he had won it was a big surprise.
"The prize money is a great keepsake for him and will go into his bank account."
As well as the overall winner Charlie was one of four category winners in this year's competition.
Taking the honours in the category for toddlers aged between 3-5 was four-year-old Amelia Thornely.
Her mum Lyndsey Miller, 24, of Manselton, said: "This was the first time I have entered her because I had time to go to the photo studio instead of being at work.
"I am chuffed to bits she has won.
"Amelia is shy and was not very happy when she had her photo done so it was a lovely surprise to win."
The winner in the category 10 months to 18 months was Mason Hinder.
His mum Kelly Mainwaring, 28, of Clydach, said: "We entered because I wanted his picture in the paper.
"I was shocked when I heard he had won but we were very happy."
And the category for 19-36 months was won by 31 month old Carson Lovell.
His mum said: "I am so proud he has won.
"His five year old brother won last year so it is really nice that Carson has won now as well.
"We are over the moon and will be putting the money in a bank account for when Carson is older."
The Baby and Toddler of the Year competition began earlier this year, when a specially created studio opened in the Quadrant Shopping Centre in Swansea.
All youngsters who entered the contest were then featured in a supplement in the South Wales Evening Post.
That signalled the start of the voting stage and the final decision on the winners rested with the panel of judges.
