A MAYOR has swapped his chain of office for a litter pick in an attempt to help clean up his town.

Councillor Malcolm Curtice, mayor of Gorseinon, has joined a gang of volunteers and Asda workers in cleaning up the streets.

Mr Curtice, however, was not impressed with the amount of litter in the area.

He said: "This is the first time I have done this. We were only collecting for about an hour and we gathered 100 bags of litter. People obviously don't care about their town. It's absolutely ridiculous."

“@hacker_jack.....fair comment. But, some of the rubbish is left by the bin men/women as well which are employed by the council.

As much we all have a social responsibility to make sure we don't litter not everyone are as conscious as us. So, the council needs to have a plan in place to deal with these people as well as clean the mess up, it just can't be left.”

“loads of litter on the street. When will we have a council that is pro active rather than re-active?!"
    ------------------

Or one could ask, when will we have a population willing to take responsibility for their own actions and not cause the problem in the first place.”

“Its about time other Mayor's and council members did the same. I am fed up of writing to councillors regarding the state of the streets in the Uplands and Brynmill. I was walking near to the post office in the Uplands last Saturday with my dog and there was shards of glass on the floor, which could of cut her paws so thankfully I saw it in time, and loads of litter on the street. When will we have a council that is pro active rather than re-active?!”
