A POSSIBLE merger of three big environment groups — Forestry Commission Wales, the Countryside Council Wales and the Environment Agency — is already under discussion in Wales.

The Assembly said it wants the groups to work closer, but has not ruled out a merger. A report laying out the options will be completed by autumn.

"If a compelling case is made for restructuring, then any plans would be developed," said Assembly Environment Minister Jane Davidson.

Environment Agency Wales employs just over 1,000 staff; the Countryside Council for Wales and Forestry Commission Wales employ 485 and 393.
