THE tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay might be an ambitious project, but it is a hugely significant project.

It would be easy to get carried away with the fantastic artist impressions and glitzy video, but this is a serious investment in Swansea Bay with potential green energy producing benefits.

It could also attract visitors, sports events and help reintroduce oysters to the bay.

It would also be easy to be sceptical about the scheme after a similar project in the bay never materialised.

Other schemes exploring new sources of energy have not been popular, for example the biomass plant in SA1 which was not well received by locals and was rejected.

So we will have to wait and see to find out what the final plans look like in a few months' time, but this could be a first for Swansea and we should try to consider it with an open mind.

“There appears to be London standing in the way now as the company is optimistic that the investors will come. At the end of the day, finance to build this should be forthcoming given the fuel it will feed off is free, predictable and for the most part... everlasting. £650M is not a lot of money as far as power stations are concerned, Nuclear for example runs into billions to construct and so does clean coal. Even the wind farms cost hundreds of million but that is expensive due to the issues with that technology that we are all aware of... unreliable fuel (wind) and very inefficient (cannot operate in high speed wind).

This machine, will use the tide. Something that will be available even after our species has come to it's end millions of years from now.”
