Leighton James column: Swansea City will have to fight to keep Michu
SWANSEA City need to brace themselves, because I expect there to be serious interest in Michu this January.
Speculation was rife over the summer that teams were preparing to try to lure the Spaniard away from South Wales, with Arsenal thought to be head of the queue.
Figures of £20 million were quoted for his services, though, thankfully from Swansea's point of view, the rumours never amounted to anything.
But if teams were reluctant to take a punt on the former Rayo Vallecano man in the last transfer window, I expect them to be a lot keener next time around.
It's possible people hesitated on Michu because they thought he might be a one-season wonder.
With five goals already this season, the Swansea forward is well on his way to proving that theory wrong.
It's important to remember that Michu also had a prolific season in La Liga before he moved to South Wales, adding more weight to the theory he's no flash in the pan.
Maybe it's because he is now playing in his favoured No.10 position behind the main striker, but Michu has looked an even better player so far this season.
His all round contribution is excellent, from slick passes to defensive interceptions. And of course, the 27-year-old remains a clinical finisher.
