COMMUNITY leaders in Burry Port are calling for a booze ban as efforts to stamp out the town's yob culture are ramped up.

At their latest meeting, Pembrey and Burry Port town councillors heard about police efforts to combat under-age drinking in the town, including stop-checks on youngsters and confiscation of alcohol.

They also heard how one Llanelli teen had been found so "severely intoxicated" she had to be escorted home — resulting in officers being unable to remain on their beats for a considerable time period.

Councillor John James raised the prospect of a ban on boozing in public in the town.

He said: "I would like to see an alcohol ban in Burry Port.

"If we had one, there would be no drinking on the streets — so it would not matter if you were 12 or 92-years-old — if you were caught flouting the law, you would be fined by police. "We need the public's support on this to make it possible."

“I know I'm going to sound like an old fogey but when did being drunk become an excuse for bad behaviour and that as it was the drink one can be excused for bad behaviour ( rather than just the reason for said behaviour)
Because oif this laxity now everyone will sooner or later have to pay more for their drink (even If its only a sherry at Xmas:)
Once upon a time the Police threw drunks in Jail - it seemed to work”
