Laudrup's men in line for awards
AHEAD of next month's Active Swansea Sports Awards, we profile the three clubs nominated for the Senior Team of the Year award.
CITY OF SWANSEA GYM CLUB MEN'S SENIOR TEAM
This year Swansea were crowned men's Welsh team champions — the first time in 20 years that Swansea have won this award.
The team consists of 19-year-olds Alex Rothe and Josh Gallagher, 17-year-olds Cilan Thomas and Saull Thomas, and 16-year-old Jac Davies.
GOWER COLLEGE SWANSEA FOOTBALL ACADEMY
Last season the college competed in ECFA (English Colleges Football Association) Premier and Regional leagues for the first time.
Among their achievements was winning the ECFA Premier Cup as well as the WSFA (Ivor Tuck) Cup.
They finished third in the Premier League, were British Colleges Sport Cup regional winners, Welsh Colleges Sport five-a-side champions and provided six players to the Welsh Colleges Under-19 squad and six to the WSFA Under-18 squad.
SWANSEA CITY FC
Swansea, under the stewardship of new boss Michael Laudrup, continue to revel in their Premier League adventure.
Predicted to make an immediate return to the Championship when they were promoted via the play-offs in 2011, the club have firmly established themselves in the top flight while winning plenty of new admirers through their attractive brand of passing football.
With Brendan Rodgers refusing to be swayed from that bold philosophy, the Swans finished 11th last season, claiming the notable scalps of champions Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal, among others.
This season, with Laudrup having replaced Rodgers at the helm and despite many changes in personnel, they continue to go from strength to strength.
Run by the development and outreach section from the City and County of Swansea, the winning results will be announced at the Active Swansea Sports Awards on Friday, December 7, at the Brangwyn Hall.
Over the next two weeks, the Evening Post will focus on those shortlisted for each category.
