Language not a necessity
WHAT is the culture that Welsh language enthusiasts are so anxious to preserve? Culture is the appreciation and understanding of literature, art and music. Everybody in Wales appreciates and understands the most popular literature of Dylan Thomas and the music of the national anthem.
Art and music do not need a language, everybody in the world can enjoy the music of Mozart and the art of Picasso. Most can enjoy the literature of Chekhov and Tolstoy because they have been expertly translated into English. To enjoy Welsh literature it is necessary to be able to read Welsh which according to the Census only half of Welsh speakers can do, while all can read and write English; leaving no case for bilingual traffic signs, road and town names or for making everybody in Wales speak and read Welsh.
