Labour leader's anger over councillor's new post
SWANSEA'S Labour leader has slammed council colleagues for handing a £9,000-plus post to the former cabinet member for social services.
Wendy Fitzgerald resigned from the high profile role after weeks of criticism following a damning report into the care of vulnerable youngsters in Swansea.
But this week she was made the local authority's presiding officer — a prestigious role that comes with an allowance of £9,725 on top of her yearly allowance for being a councillor.
Labour councillor David Phillips slammed the decision to appoint Councillor Fitzgerald to the high profile job calling it a "moral disgrace".
But Mrs Fitzgerald said: "This is politics at its dirtiest. I have taken a lot of hits over this — but I can stand a few more."

“going back to basic principles. The presiding officer ( ie the Chairperson) of any organistion has to be someone who can rise above party political afiliations and command the respect of all sides.
Without commenting on the rights or wrongs of Cllr Fitzgeralds previous position, and/or whether the criticisms of Cllr Philips etc are principled/ personal or political, having sat in the public gallery and heard the attacks made on Clr Fitzgerald, and her responses, it is difficult to percieve that however well she tries as presisding officer her position can be percieved to be as 'neuteral' as it should.”

“@James, Swansea. The first sentence of your response to me belongs in "Pseud's Corner". You did not comment about Cllr. Wendy Fitzgerald's track record.
I have no interest in living in any country that is ruled by a totalitarian regime.
Some of your chums in the local LibDem party visited China and claimed their return flight excess baggage charges on expenses.
Your comment about Bertolucci ("Last Tango in Paris" and "The Last Emperor") being corrupt

is baffling.”

“Re: Paul, West Cross
As Politics is an interlinked subject area, your own comments, not for the first time, appear not to transcend the 'reality' boundaries! Surprisingly, you seem to have ignored the fact that I did make comments about Wendy Fitzgerald! Then again, as it obvious you appear to be against 'Democracy', as your earlier posted comments appears to suggest, you should consider to pack your bags and go to a Communist state such as China!

“Thank you James Sheridan for raising the unrelated subjects of National Government and the European Union. To remain on subject, I would like to question Cllr. Fitzgerald¿s apparent admission that she was never actually overseeing things as the Cabinet Minister for Social Services. If Cllr. Fitzgerald wasn't doing much, maybe she should repay her special responsibility allowances for the last five years?”

“Jim--Why are you making such a political issue, out of this expense fiasco--All three main political parties are equally guilty. On morals,do you actually think that the relationship between the Lib/Dem's and these so called Independents is a healthy one and in Swansea's best interests?. (Independent, meaning, freedom from control).Yet didn't the 14 independents all voted to form a coalition after meeting with Cllr Holley, and it appears that the Independents got a good deal for themselves,by either being elected to a cabinet post or being part of the many committee's in this administration. Read a back edition of the E.P just after last years election.”

“How can any 'Elected' Labour Member, whether Elected to serve in Swansea, Cardiff Bay, Europe or in Westminster, make comments like David Philips has done, given the failed Labour regime not only in Swansea but throughout the UK, which the Expenses fiasco is just one of many poor judgements the Country has had to suffer from!?
Labour became a law unto themselves and have refused to heed to the anger of the British people. Labour has allowed the rise of minor Parties such as the BNP to happen, due to bad management of the country. The Tories are not a sufficiently credible Party to vote for as an 'alternative'. Cameron, if his Morals had have been in the right place, at the right time, would have ensured his MP's did not milk the Expenses system from several years ago! Remember, the Expenses fiasco has been brought to both the Information Commissioner and the High Court's attention. Therefore Cameron's stance was simply Electioneering on the eve of the Euro Elections and on the knowledge we will be having a General Election within the next year!
Wendy Fitzgerald was Elected by our Local Governmment Democratic system, as it now is. Whether she is the right person for the job, will only be demonstrated by her performance in Office, which I am sure will be well documented on for our behalf, by our local newspaper, the Evening Post!

“Cllr Holley it is now time for you to go-- How many times has he been manipulated by these so called (Joking Independents). The Lib/Dems only achieved power because of these Independents, who got a good deal for themselves on cabinet posts and committee's.This latest appointment is fastical, and a sham, plus a total disgrace. No i am not a labourite just an observer.”
