Labour leader Ed Miliband looking like Prime Minister-designate, says Neath MP Peter Hain
NEATH MP Peter Hain believes Ed Miliband is looking "increasingly like the Prime Minister-designate" following last week's Eastleigh by-election.
In a blog for the New Statesman the former Welsh Secretary said the by-election, in which Labour's candidate John O'Farrell came a poor fourth, confirmed "that David Cameron won't win the next election".
Mr Hain said that on a "good day" Labour "could well defy the odds and win outright in 2015" and, at the very least, become the "largest single party, able to form a government". Arguing that hung Parliaments, in which no party has overall control, might become a "semi-permanent fixture" for British politics, Mr Hain said in that case "coalition needs to be done a lot better than under the Cameron-Clegg governments where it has become a byword for broken promises, betrayals and sheer incompetence".
He added that the present Labour leader had "quickly recovered" Labour's "natural vote".
