Jose Canas ready to thrive at Swansea City
JOSE Canas believes he is ready to thrive at Swansea City.
The Real Betis midfielder has today given a farewell press conference in Spain after opting to leave for Wales.
Michael Laudrup has been tracking Canas for months, and Swansea announced almost a fortnight ago that he was on his way to the Liberty.
Speaking about the move for the first time, the 26-year-old says he is relishing the prospect of trying his hand in the Premier League.
“The progression in my sporting life is important and at Swansea I saw something different,” Canas said.
“In Swansea I saw a great opportunity where I will continue to grow as a person and as a player.
“It’s not that I was offered more or less money.
“The Premier League is different and I want to experience new things, something I could not do by staying at Betis.
“I had to see other things so for my family and for my future I took this decision.
“I will not deny that they have also made a financial effort and it’s unfortunate I decided not to renew my contract (at Betis), but economically Betis could not get to what I think I deserve — but I understand perfectly.
“It was not only economically, but many other factors.
“I feel I can grow a lot at Swansea. The Premier League really catches my attention and I think my football can be beneficial there.
“I want new experiences and I think I will grow as a player and as a person.”
Canas is understood to have turned down a significantly larger financial package at West Brom to sign for Swansea, where he becomes the latest in a line of Spanish imports.
He captained Betis last season and helped the Seville-based club into the Europa League, where they could yet meet his new side.
Canas has been criticised by some sections of the Betis support having opted to leave, but he has thanked the fans for their support.
“I lived ten years in Seville and I grew up through the ranks at Real Betis,” he added.
“I always wanted to grow as a player and as a person and at all times tried to give everything.
“So now that my career will continue out of this club, I can only thank all those who have been with me, with whom I have learned and enjoyed on and off the field.”
