Jonathan Davies hails Scarlets effort
CREDIT to the boys — we played some really good stuff last weekend, and to have a 13-point lead against Racing Metro, there was inevitably some level of frustration and disappointment after the game that we came away with a draw.
Winning at home is something we take great pride in and it was just a couple of errors that cost us the victory. And with the quality that Racing have in their team they took every opportunity we handed to them to come back into the game.
At 23-10 up I thought we played well, both with the ball and in defence and were holding Racing in the arm wrestle for the majority of the game and showed that we were ambitious in this game.
We got off to a poor start and then grew into the game well. We were competitive during the majority of the game and despite being written off beforehand against a French side with so many quality players in their ranks — it just shows what commitment, good preparation and a strong team spirit can do.
I can't fault the effort put in by the boys on Saturday evening and it was great to hear so many voices at Parc y Scarlets — the home crowd were brilliant and all the players want to thank every supporter for turning out to back us. It really makes a big difference.
We've had a reasonable start and now will face two very big games against Clermont in the double-header leading up to Christmas, so I hope our supporters are booking their tickets already to make sure they are part of a crucial home tie. It should be another great occasion at Parc y Scarlets.
Next we turn our attention back to the domestic league as we travel away to Zebre and that is never an easy trip with the Italian sides growing in experience and confidence with every game. We have to ensure we bring consistency to our league performances and take the positive momentum we've gained from these two big Heineken Cup games forward now.
Overall as Scarlets, I think we've showed our ambition as a group so far and in both European games we showed we can stand up in our pool and bring the type of intensity and commitment needed to get some big results. The boys have showed up well.
