Jobs axe will fall over 'hundreds' more employees, says Swansea Council boss
HUNDREDS of jobs are to go as Swansea Council seeks to close a major gap in its finances.
Council leader Chris Holley has admitted that the authority will be forced to impose compulsory redundancies on staff and revise plans to cut staff numbers.

Swansea Council leader Chris Holley.
Last February, the council announced it was to axe 500 jobs by 2012 — hoping the numbers would be made up of natural wastage and voluntary redundancy, avoiding compulsory redundancy.
However, with just 130 of those positions gone, and in the face of a £15 million gap in its budget, the council has been forced to adjust its target, with hundreds more of the 13,000 total workforce facing the axe.
Councillor Holley said: "That figure (500) is going to have to be extended now because of the cuts the Assembly Government and national government are making.
"We did start this process at the point where we are going to have to have 500 job losses.
"That is the minimum.
"I suspect it will be more than that.
"I would say probably hundreds on top of the 500."
Asked about whether there would be compulsory redundancies at the authority, Councillor Holley said: "It would be impossible for me to say no. I sincerely hope there will not be.
"We will work as best we can to avoid them."
Councillor Holley said it was wrong for trade union Unison to claim it had not been consulted. He said: "Officially, we started discussing it with them two years ago."
However Unison, which has local government members working in the authority, say there has been no contact over the latest development.
Mike Davies, from the Swansea branch of Unison, said: "We had a joint consultative committee meeting last week, and we made representations that we are seeking urgent discussions with the council.
"Of course, it is a concern because, whatever the result of the budget, it is not likely to be good news.
"However, we want to be informed exactly what the position of the council is going to be."
Mr Davies added that, while the authority has not told Unison how many job cuts it is considering, he believed it "is well above the 500 from last year."
He said: "I think they are probably going to have to look at compulsory redundancies now."
It is not just council employees in Swansea who are facing an uncertain future.
Yesterday, the Post revealed that the axe will fall on between 500 and 750 jobs at Neath Port Talbot Council as the authority seeks to balance its books.

“Ray Welsby
I agree with most of your words but.I cannot agree with wages issue!
Council-school cleaners are on aprox 15 hour a week at £6.30 an hour and most employment agencies shops and offices offer around the £5.80"miserly"minimum wage!”

“I find it disgracefull that the council are looking to shed over 500 jobs. Cllr, Holley and his coalition have now been in control of this council for nearly 6years and have not looked after the work force. The reasons being not one of these councillors have got hands on experience and do not know thier workforce as cabinet members or have bothered to meet them face to face. Also the oppersition are exactley the same. The reason I know before Steve Jones starts making comments is because I worked in the building department long before I became a former councillor. The council employee's work hard and are paid less than other private employee's, and as for Steve Jones walking 5miles ask an old building worker how many miles they have walked from job to job?
This council have failed not only the people of Swansea but thier employee's shame on all 72 councillors.”

“Steve--Geoff---Council Worker. You all make some valid points. Do not bicker amongst yourselfs. The people who should carry most of criticism is Cllr Holley and his cabinet.
Cllr Holley appears to be a poor leader, with very little support from his inept cabinet. In fact not one person stands out as a worthy replacement.
Cllr Holley states he has been in consultation with Unison officals yet the officals denied any meeting has taken place over the latest developments. Who do we the local-tax-payers believe?. 750 job-cuts. No future for our school -leavers within council, our council was a large employer for the youths of Swansea. If this ruling council of Holley and his gang are allowed to continue in power. Our City will not only be jobless --but also without any services.”

“Steve jones, uplands, i agree with geoff, west cross you do sound like eddie from uplands, infact I think your the same person. If you got such a problem with council staff then why don't you make an official complaint to the chief executive via proper channels instead of moaning constantly on here about the "lazy" council staff you rant about. Further more if you think you can run the council better why don't you do it? Since you talk as though your Mr I've done it all and better. Plenty of people walked for miles on ice and snow to get to work. But why should a petite woman have to carry her child on foot from mumbles to uplands on icey pavements to his creche and walk back to town to work and then end of the day walk back up uplands on the ice again and back to mumbles. What happens if she slips on the ice with her child and cause injury? It will be more sick days off again and you be first to moan about that ! You not got much common sense have you Mr Jones? You got a problem with council staff then go down to the civic centre and see the chief about it, if you got the guts! Cos your getting very boring down.”

“Peter, Swansea - I want rid of both of them, Holley and the mayor. Holley is utterley useless, what a waste of (considerable) space he is. The Lib Dems are equally as inept as the last Labour council. It's "bung" central. CORRUPT CORRUPT CORRUPT.”

“Name one thing I've ever moaned about? There isn't one. I just point out the truth that most on here can't see.
This site is mostly filled with people who want something for nothing. They want a cushy job that other people pay for. It's always me, me, me. They think someone else should always be the ones doing things and paying for them. The expect everything for free.
If something good happens in the city they just moan. moan, moan. I'm just pointing out how stupid they are. I'm not moaning. I love tell them how stupid they are.
I don't need to put the city down. Just read the comments on here and you can see what a 3rd rate city it is with 3rd rate residents.
You all vote for rubbish councillors, spend all your time on here complainin about them and then go and vote for them again. You allow them to create schemes that you don't want like the bendy bus, etc. Most of you must be completely stupid to allow them to do this to your town. People in other towns wouldn't stand for it.
Why don't you all stand up and be counted for once in your life. Actually get up and do something about the state of your city instead of moaning all day long.”

“Anon Swansea said " If people could pick and choose their jobs currently don't you think council staff would jump ship before they are pushed?!"
No I don't think they would because there is no private sector firm that would put up with their sick leave, laziness and general lack of work and committment. They work for the council because it is a cushy number and couldn't hack it in the real world.”

“Council Worker, Swansea - I've never moaned on a single comment ever. I just point out the stupidity of other people on your and lazy council workers, etc. It is not moaning at all.
You may like to know that in some countries people walk 20-40 miles every single day to get water and carry a heavy jug of it. They don't complain at all, they just get on with it. It is oitiful that people in this country get stopped by a little snow.
When I lived in London I walked 5 miles to work during the tube strike. Some others did as well. But some just moaned and complained like you do.
I'm obviously not getting boring, because I make people like you sit up and think for once in your life. You get upset because it hits a raw nerve.
I don't need a job. I'm capable of take care of myself instead of sponging off taxpayers like you do. We pay for your job and then you just moan, moan, moan. If you don't like your employer, then just resign and find another job. Or won't anyone on the private sector want you because you are a 2nd rate worker?”
