Jessie Joseph had to pay for first date - but after 70 years of marriage she's still "putting up with" Cwmavon husband Van
A MAN who told a first date to bring money because he was always skint, has celebrated 70 years of marriage to the woman in question.
Eilfryn and Jessie Joseph have travelled the world together, but now they are content to stay put at their home of two years in Baglan Lodge Care Home.
Mr Joseph, known as Van to friends, met Mrs Joseph in Kettering in 1941, when they were both serving in the forces.
"Jessie was in the ATS driving army vehicles and I was in 209 company of the Royal Horse Artillery," said the 97-year-old.
"The first time I asked her out, I told her to meet me outside the cinema — but I told her to bring some money with her, because I never had any, I was always skint."
The couple later married at the Church of Christ in Wallasey, Cheshire, on October 9, 1943. Following their marriage, the pair moved to Addis Ababa, where they lived for three and a half years — and where son Peter was born. The pair also had three other children — David, Eileen and Christine.
"We came home in 1952 and lived in Cwmavon," said Mr Joseph.

The pair had different ideas about the secret of a long and successful marriage.
Mrs Joseph, 92, said: "Well I just put up with him and he puts up with me."
Mr Joseph said: "I put the money on the table and ask my wife to distribute the finances.
"I would tell her, don’t give me more than I should have, or I’ll spend it on beer."
The pair have eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Youngest daughter, Christine Allen, speaking on behalf of the family, said: "We are very, very proud of both of them.
"They are wonderful parents, they have been family people, they really are very special."
Manager of Baglan Lodge, Ruth Clark, wished congratulations to Mr and Mrs Joseph, adding: "They are part of the family here and we wish them happiness for many years to come."
