Intelligence pays off in drugs battle
BURRY Port police have "very good intelligence" in the war on drugs in the town, officers have declared.
At last week's town council meeting, members were keen to know what was being done to address the issue.
PCSO Rachel Summerbell told them that four drugs crimes had been detected by officers in Burry Port during the last month.
Councillor Pat Jones asked: "When you find drugs on this person do you find out where they get the drugs from in the first place?"
Support officer Summerbell said: "We take them in for questioning and seize their mobile phones."
Officers then traced phone bills in a bid to contact drug suppliers.
"We have very good intelligence in this area," she said. "There's always going to be a drug problem in any area. We have been quite proactive.
"A lot of dealers go away and commute quite a long distance to come in."
Mrs Jones responded: "That's a good deterrent. If people come to this part of town they know they won't get away with it."
Councillor Steve James added: "It's a zero-tolerance attitude, but it does get results.
"It's controversial, but it does work."
Councillor Joanna Davies asked: "What's the situation with class A drugs? Is it getting worse or easing off?"
The PCSO said: "I can't say I have noticed any difference in the severity of the drugs. A lot of the searches are for cannabis, however there are class A drugs in the area."
Mr James added that he was still receiving complaints about gatherings of groups of youths by the Premier store, blocking traffic. "I can't say it's criminal when they just don't appear to be consuming alcohol, but it is intimidating for people," he said.
Support officer Summerball said the issue was a priority for the police this month.
"I'm working this weekend and they are moved on regularly," she added.
